The NZ Firearms Licence written test is administered by Te Tari Pūreke (the Firearms Safety Authority) and is a mandatory step in obtaining a standard A-category firearms licence in New Zealand. The theory test is sat as part of the Mandatory Firearms Safety Course, booked through the Mountain Safety Council, not at a separate AA or VTNZ testing centre, you sit it before the practical firearms handling session at the same course venue.
The test consists of 30 questions with a 93% pass mark (28 out of 30 correct). Seven questions relate to the compulsory Seven Safety Rules, you must answer all seven correctly or you automatically fail, regardless of your overall score.
