About the NZ Learner Licence Theory Test

Before you can drive on NZ roads, you must pass the learner licence theory test set by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency. The test checks your knowledge of road rules, road signs, safe driving practices, and licensing conditions before you get behind the wheel.

The theory test covers four areas:

Important: New Zealand uses a graduated licensing system. A learner licence is not the same as a restricted or full licence. Each stage has specific conditions and restrictions. Know the rules for each stage before your test.

Key NZ Road Rules to Know

Waka Kotahi provides a free online practice test but many candidates find the give way rules and road sign sections the hardest parts. TestReady's 100+ questions target these areas specifically with full explanations.

Learner Licence Theory Test: Common Questions

Road Rules, Road Signs, Safe Driving, and Licensing (the graduated licensing system and its conditions). TestReady's 100+ questions are spread across all four, matching the Waka Kotahi test format.
Give-way rules at intersections and road sign recognition trip up the most candidates. Both require precise recall rather than general driving sense. TestReady targets these areas specifically, with full explanations for every answer.
Their free test is a good starting point, but many candidates still find the give-way rules and road sign sections the hardest parts after using it. TestReady adds 60 more questions with deeper explanations targeting exactly those weak spots.
Learner licence holders must be supervised by someone 20 or older who's held a full licence for at least 2 years, have zero alcohol, and display L plates. These conditions, along with restricted licence rules, are commonly tested and covered in our Licensing section questions.
