About the NZ Motorcycle Licence Theory Test
Before getting a motorcycle licence in New Zealand, you must pass a theory test set by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency. The test checks your knowledge of road rules, road signs, hazard awareness, and safe riding practices specific to motorcycles.
The theory test covers four areas:
- Road Rules: speed limits, give-way rules, alcohol limits, licence restrictions (learner/restricted/full), overtaking, following distances, and parking rules specific to motorcycles
- Hazard Perception: identifying and responding to road hazards, stopping distances, scanning techniques, road surface risks, and situational awareness
- Road Signs: warning signs, regulatory signs, speed limit signs, advisory speeds, information signs, and the meanings of road markings
- Rider Safety: helmet requirements, protective clothing, pre-ride checks, lane positioning, group riding, fatigue, and conspicuity
Important: NZ uses a graduated licensing system for motorcycles. You must hold a learner licence before getting a restricted licence, and a restricted licence before a full licence. Each stage has specific restrictions, and restrictions for riders under 20 are stricter than for adults. Know your limits before you ride.
Key NZ Motorcycle Licence Rules to Know
- Speed limits: 50 km/h default urban, 100 km/h default open road, 40 km/h school zones (when lights flash)
- Following distance: Minimum 2 seconds dry, 4 seconds in wet conditions
- Alcohol limits: 0.05 BAC (250 mcg/L breath) for riders 20+; zero tolerance for under-20s and all learner/restricted licence holders
- Helmets: Required for both rider and pillion passenger, no exceptions
- Learner restrictions: No pillion passengers, no motorway use, must display yellow L plates
- Restricted restrictions: No pillion passengers, no motorway use
- Lane filtering: Not legal in New Zealand
