About the NZ PPLH Theory Exams

To obtain a NZ Private Pilot Licence (Helicopter), you must pass six written theory exams administered by Aspeq on behalf of the CAA. The pass mark for all subjects is 70%. All questions are multiple-choice. The NZ CAA PPLH written exams are administered by Aspeq at testing centres across NZ. The helicopter exams include helicopter-specific content - particularly in the Helicopter Technical and Human Factors subjects - that differs significantly from the fixed-wing PPL exams.

The helicopter technical exam is the most helicopter-specific subject. It covers aerodynamics and phenomena unique to rotary-wing aircraft - autorotation, vortex ring state, ground resonance, effective translational lift, and dynamic rollover. These cannot be studied from fixed-wing PPL resources.
